Officer William J. McCarthy IV, 60, of 125 E, Leasure Avenue New Castle, passed away the night of May 2, 2013 in the line of duty as a result of a motor vehicle accident.
William was born in New Castle on November 9, 1952. He was the son of William J. and Clara DeSanto McCarthy III, they survive in Grove City, PA. William was married to the former Patty Jo McFall, she survives at home. Mr. McCarthy was of the Roman Catholic faith.
William attended of Indiana University of Pennsylvania with degree in General Studies. He also received his Legal Weapons Training Certificate in 1980. Mr. McCarthy work for General Electric in Grove City for 18 years as a repair Welder, Head of Ergonomics Team and Head of Emergency Response Team; retiring in 2009. Jerry also worked for Grove City College and Penn State University as the Senior Training and Patrol Officer. Mr. McCarthy formerly worked as a Police Officer for the South New Castle Borough for 4 years. Jerry also works full-time for the Lawrence County District Attorney as a Detective/Humane Officer. Most recently, Jerry has been employed by the Shenango Twp. Police Department as a Patrol Officer. He also recently received a promotion with the Zoning Board of Shenango Twp. as the new Code Enforcement Officer. Mr. McCarthy was a training instructor with several different self-defense programs and devices; including RADD, Baton and Taser instructor.
Mr. McCarthy was an avid hunter and fisherman, who loved the outdoors. He also enjoyed all types of shooting sports. William enjoyed working and being around people; especially his fellow police officers from all the area departments. He was considered a jack of all trades by his family. He had a soft spot for animals too. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends. His grandchildren referred to him lovingly as Papa Jerry. Anyone who knew him knows that Jerry never said (Good Bye), but always a warm (God Bless) when you departed.
In addition to his wife Patty Jo and parents, William is survived by two sons, Michael A. (Lynn) McCarthy of Dawsonville, GA. and Benjamin P. McCarthy of Philadelphia, PA.; his daughter, Christine (Nathan) Head of Dawsonville, GA.; Step-daughter, Laura Ann Pierce of York, PA.; Step-son, Phillip Mark McFall of New Castle; sister, Lynn (Dan) Busatto of Grove City; six grandchildren, Lindsey Head, Dylan Head, Sophie Head, Grace McCarthy, Lane McCarthy and William Jackson McCarthy.
William was preceded in death by both his Maternal and Paternal Grandparents.
Calling hours for William will be held from 1 pm to 7pm Monday, May 6, 2013 and 1pm to 7pm Tuesday, May 7 at St. Vitus Parish 910 S. Mercer Street, New Castle, PA 16101.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 11:30am. The family will meet at St. Vitus Parish in the morning before Mass. The Rev. Frank D. Almade, Pastor of St. Vitus Parish will officiate. The Rite of Committal and Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park, Grove City, PA. He will be buried with full military honors performed by the Pennsylvania State Police Ceremonial Unit at the cemetery. The Family has asked to have memorial contributions be made in Williams name to the Promises for Pets, P.O. Box 621, New Castle, PA. 16103 and St. Jude Children Research Hospital 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Arrangements where entrusted to the Noga Funeral Home Inc. 1142 S. Mill Street New Castle, PA 16103.
